For the legendary South Sudanese performer—and his cousin and accompanist, Paul Biel—playing music is about bringing people together as well as something even greater. In performing a blend of traditional rhythms and lyrics that dance between English, Arabic and his native language, Nuer, their ultimate mission is to raise awareness of the asylum seeker experience, and earn the money they need to reunite their own family in Australia someday soon.

The enigmatic singer, composer and frontwoman of future-jazz luminaries Hiatus Kaiyote has earned the respect and admiration of soul music royalty, including Erykah Badu, Questlove and Prince. Twice Grammy-nominated, her music has been sampled by Anderson.Paak (‘Malibu’), Drake (‘More Life’) and Kendrick Lamar (‘DAMN’). Along with her collaborators in Hiatus Kaiyote, she has paved the way for a new generation of musicians, inspired by her harmonic freedom and that singular voice.

Nai will present treasured songs from her catalogue in an intimate solo performance at Malthouse Outdoor Stage.

We are lucky to have her.
