This February, the Music in Exile label, a not-for-profit profiling Australian musicians from diverse cultural backgrounds, are proud to present an electrifying one-night-only live music & dance collaboration from 9-piece West African ensemble Ausecuma Beats and their kindred spirits at the forefront of the Melbourne ‘jazzy house’ scene, Horatio Luna and band.

Outlined as a means for both artists to explore the roots of contemporary funk, jazz and house music, as well as the relevance of both traditional and contemporary African & Carribean styles in the burgeoning Melbourne music scene today, ‘Afro-Futurism: Back to the Source’, is a remarkable live event that will draw upon musical cultures and styles not only across international boundaries, but across decades of music history and development.

The performance will be split into two hour-long sets drawing upon the rich tapestry of musical experience brought by all members of the collaboration, a packed house of different skill sets ranging from traditional West African drumming, Cuban percussion, jazz schooling, electronic beat making and vinyl sampling & DJing.

This one-night-only performance will happen on Saturday, Feb 12 @ Colour Club, and has been supported in part by the City of Melbourne’s Quick Response grant program. Guaranteed to get hot: bring dancing shoes!

“This is about sharing the knowledge of music between young Western artists here in Australia and traditional musicians from all around the world. We want to develop something new and unique, something fun and enjoyable. This is what music is about - coming together, celebrating community, celebrating what we all share, and having fun.” - Boubacar Gaye, Ausecuma Beats
