Why a Videogame with Exploding Suns and No Guns is Adam Christou’s Game of the Year

The Outer Wilds is a videogame that started out as Alex Beachum’s Master’s thesis, which aimed to recreate the feeling of Apollo 13 and 2001: A Space Odyssey. Players find themselves in a distant galaxy that is threatened by ecological disaster and a sun that explodes every 22 minutes. How do you win? Well, any way you want! Players create their own goals and tasks in order to navigate the time loop and explore the many threats of space exploration, including being consumed by a black hole or a giant planet.
