The White Girl: Tony Birch Discusses His New Novel on Breakfasters
Acclaimed writer and historian Tony Birch joins the Breakfasters to chat about his new book, The White Girl. Set in south-eastern Australia, the novel focuses on Odette, an extraordinary Indigenous woman who is the soul carer of her granddaughter, Sissy. When a new policeman comes to town, Sissy is targeted because of her fair skin and Odette must make a decision to save her family. The novel is loosely based on the historical experiences of women in Aboriginal reserves and missions and Tony’s personal experience with those in his community who were impacted by the removal policies. The novel explores how mid-level colonial violence can be devastatingly powerful in rural communities, destroying friendships between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people and breaking up families.
