The Rap: Starting Conversations with East Kimberley’s Dallas Woods

Hailing from Wyndham in the East Kimberley, hip hop artist Dallas Woods (‘9 Times Out of 10’, ‘Chapter One’) tells Areej Nur about his musical journey. Beginning his career as a teenage dancer, he used his skills as an engagement tool to open up discussion about mental health with at-risk kids. Following that (‘once age kicked in and backflips were out’) he taught himself how to make music and began covering the heavy social issues – violence, suicide, incarceration and depression – that affect Indigenous communities. ‘There’s no limit on where you can take it,’ he says.
