The Grapevine: Understanding The Impacts From The Loss of Local Newspapers
Margaret Simons, award-winning journalist, author and board member of Public Interest Journalism Initiative, joins Kulja to chat about the loss of local newspapers around the country and the sustainability of media models. Margaret says that regional and suburban areas now risk becoming “news deserts”; while world news is still available, local news that impacts communities will be harder to find. Margaret warns that this will impact people on many levels and lead to both a depleted sense of agency and a loss of a sense of community. She also explains that the news product is in more demand than ever and this is a growing trend; rather, it's the business model that's broken.
