The Grapevine: How To Protect Yourself Against Melbourne’s Mosquito Summer

“Do you have a pro-mosquito line?”

“No I don’t, because it’s my job to kill the mosquitos. Honestly... we can take them out of the environment and there are plenty of other bugs that will fill their small niche.”

As Victoria enters what is predicted to be another wet summer, there are concerns about the numbers of mosquitos and the diseases they may be carrying. With plenty of stagnant water around for mosquitos to lay their eggs in, their numbers have exploded. Combined with the introduction of Japanese encephalitis to Australia last year, there is concern that this may lead to an increase in people catching mosquito-borne diseases. Mosquito disease expert Dr Tanya Russell joins The Grapevine to discuss what drives mosquito numbers, how to protect yourself from their bites and why you shouldn’t feel too bad about swatting them.
