Interview
The Grapevine: How Australian Law Enforcers Are Using Face-Recognition AI
Hannah Ryan from Buzzfeed News calls in to discuss the use of Clearview AI, a tool that scours the internet for images of people’s faces and then stores them in a mass database available to a number of law enforcement bodies. One body with access to this information is the Australian Federal Police, whose uptake of this technology is currently underdetermined and obscured from public knowledge. Hannah discusses the ambiguity surrounding how the AFP uses and distributes this information, as well as some other ethical complexities surrounding this sort of technology in the context of race and privacy.
