SmartArts: Joel Bray On Breaking Down Colonial History Through The Art Of Dance

“I see myself as continuing 60,000 years of art-making by the Wiradjuri people.” Wiradjuri man Joel Bray, a dancer, maker and artist, joins Richard Watts on SmartArts to explore the ideas behind his new Yirramboi 2021 performance, Considerable Sexual License. Reclaiming the exact words of a 1910 white anthropologist, his show reflects on the intersection between Aboriginality and sexuality, encouraging people to escape restrictive tropes and the ongoing shackles of colonisation.
