Primal Screen: Gillian Armstrong Takes A Look Back On Her Brilliant Career
The great Gillian Armstrong (director, trailblazer, Australian New Wave alum) calls in to Primal Screen ahead of Wildflowers: Dancing, Desire and Freedom in the Films of Gillian Armstrong, a retrospective of her films now playing as part of the Melbourne Cinémathèque. The series, which is showing her classic films My Brilliant Career and Little Women, alongside some of her harder-to-find films and documentaries, is playing across April for Melbourne Cinémathèque members. In chatting with Primal Screen, Armstrong reflects on her diverse filmography and her vexed relationship to her position as a “pioneering female filmmaker”; “Do they ask the director of Parasite why he makes so many films about men?” she asks with the dry humour that runs through so much of her work.
Wildflowers: Dancing, Desire and Freedom in the Films of Gillian Armstrong is on now at ACMI. Find out more here.
