Off The Record: Adia Victoria’s New Southern Gothic
When discussing her new record A Southern Gothic, South Carolinian singer Adia Victoria says “the gothic is the manifestation of fear… I necessarily embody what they call the Other.” This theme of examining her place within different genres runs through all of Adia’s work but is at the forefront of this new album. Chatting to Off The Record from the Americana Festival in Nashville, Adia talks about genre expectations, from the gothic literature she’s been reading to the genres of Blues and Americana she has found herself working in. In a wide-ranging chat, Brian and Aida talk about recording the album in Paris with T Bone Burnett, playing with Jason Isabell and the pull of the American south.
