‘We’re working in this imperfect system that doesn’t recognise the subtle differences between us all,’ says Melanie Cheng, a writer, general practitioner and Chinese-Australian. Her debut short story collection Australia Day tackles this problem head on. Through a cast of complex and nuanced characters she explores the diverse range of experiences that make up Australia today. She joins Mel on Backstory to discuss her upcoming appearances at the Brimbank Writers & Readers Festival, the importance of diverse stories, and some of the phenomenal authors she’ll be interviewing as part of the festival.
