Writer and editor Hilary McPhee joins Mel Fulton to discuss the 25th-anniversary edition of Other People’s Words, her memoir of the celebrated independent publishing house she founded with Diana Gribble in 1975.

Hilary reflects on the reading lives of her mother and grandmother, whose weekly letters and conversations shaped her instinct to write to authors and tell them when their work moved her. That same intimacy carried into McPhee Gribble, where editing happened through long conversation by a fireplace,

McPhee recalls recognising the voices of writers of Helen Garner and Gerald Murnane, and chasing the late Barry Dickins after he rubbed out their edits.

Other People’s Words captures the friendships, risks and belief behind a publishing house that helped reshape Australian literature, while honouring the creative partnership McPhee carries with her.
