Julia Wilson Talks Running a Record Label and the Artists She’s After on Local and/or General
Rice is Nice co-founder Julia Wilson chats with Local and/or General about her record label’s progression from fledgling business to indie heavyweight within the Australian music scene. Looking back over the past decade, Julia describes the bleak state of the label world that existed circa 2008 and how Rice is Nice came to be.
After working at Mushroom, Julie made the switch to Sydney’s music scene noticing a giant indie sized gap that lead to her starting her own label. ‘I liked the idea of starting one myself, that was always kind of a pipe dream.’
With tracks by Rice is Nice artists Frowning Clouds and Seekae featuring on the show, Julia talks about the label’s diversity, citing her preference for different styles and not subscribing to one particular sound.
Despite some of the harder parts that come with running a label, the work that Julia does is incredibly rewarding, as is the support and respect that Rice is Nice has received from Australia’s music community as well.
