Greedy Algorithms: The Pros and Cons of AI with Personality on Byte Into IT
Would you trust an algorithm? Melbourne Law School researcher Hui Xian Chia has been investigating artificial intelligence and wondering how we develop trust with algorithms. She joins Byte Into IT to discuss whether ‘personality’ within an algorithm with would build trust amongst us humans. Her fascination began whilst watching the Banking Royal Commission unfold. Hui noted that most of the issues discussed were motivated by greed. She then considered AI as a possible solution, as a non-human financial advisor would not be greedy and would not need any money. However, monitoring Robo financial advisors and the behaviour of algorithms is not easy, and neither is getting people to trust them. One solution would be to give the algorithms a personality, so that people could better understand how they function and what to expect.
