Future Perfect: Dr Emma Shortis Talks US Politics

The leftwing political outsider Abdul El-Sayed has won Michigan's Democratic Senate primary, a race which has exposed bitter divisions within the party over its future direction. El-Sayed, the son of Egyptian migrants, would become the first US Muslim to serve in the US Senate if he defeats Republican and Trump ally Mike Rogers, in November's midterm elections.

Dr Emma Shortis is the Director of the Australia Institute's International & Security Affairs Program, and she joined Dylan to discuss that race and the current state of leftwing politics in the United States.

"The progressive wing on the left in America is not afraid to stand on principal to talk about the type of America that they actually want."
