Einstein A Go-Go: Getting To Know The Marine Animals Of Macquarie Island
Dr. Shane speaks with Julie McInnes about her latest findings on Macquarie Island, 1500km southwest of Hobart, and the effects of COVID-19 on scientific research at outposts around Antarctica. Using DNA meta-barcoding, the same technique used to identify different strains in COVID-19 testing, McInnes and her team analyse the diets of Macquarie Island seabirds and seals. These predatory animals act as "indicator species", telling a story of all the marine life they have eaten and digested between Macquarie Island and the Antarctic ice shelf.
