Breakfasters: Vaccine Passports And Mandates With Lawyer Hugh de Kretser
The prospect of vaccine passports and vaccine mandates raises important questions about human rights and privacy.
Executive Director of the Human Rights Law Centre, Hugh de Kretser, tells Breakfasters that from a human rights perspective it’s about getting a balance between how to protect life and health without reasonably restricting other human rights. The vaccine plays a significant role as it prevents disease and saves lives, and we now need an accessible and equitable vaccine rollout. Once everyone has an opportunity to get the vaccine, we can look at ways to incentivise vaccine uptake.
Hugh says that the best approach is the lowest level of restriction to get the job done. This means prioritising incentives, health promotion and good communication campaigns; compulsory measures and penalties should be a last result.
