Breakfasters: How Beauty Ideals Fragment Self-Understanding with Bri Lee
Award-winning author Bri Lee drops in to discuss her new offering, Beauty, which is a reflection on the pernicious ways that beauty standards shape the ways that we interact with ourselves. Bri discusses how women are compelled to internalise and act in accordance with beauty ideals that they may consciously reject, and how these conflicting experiences produce a kind of ‘dual self’ – one that embodies who we actually are, and one who abides by and reflects dominant beauty norms. She reflects on how this duality affected her, as well as why she is critical of the current ‘before and after’ frameworks that dominate narratives of disordered eating.
