Nana sits down with the genre-blurring rapper, BARAKA THE KID, to dive into the making of his vulnerable new album, IF TOMORROW NEVA COMES.
They talk about the diverse and rich music scene in Geelong, where the Congolese-Rwandan artist is based. He reflects on growing up battle rapping and how he fell in love with rap music. They discuss the importance of tenacity and persistence in carving his path as a young aspiring rapper, in the face of family and cultural expectations.
BARAKA unpacks the chaos underpinning his life while making IF TOMORROW NEVA COMES and the fundamental changes he made to his personal and professional mindsets to create the album. He and Nana discuss the vulnerability of his music and how it challenges the expectation for Black men to never show weakness. BARAKA also walks Nana through his process of finding trustworthy collaborators, and creating music in his first language, Swahili.
