Backstory: Why Nina Kenwood Focuses on Character over Plot

Mel chats with author Nina Kenwood, whose debut novel It Sounded Better in My Head won the 2018 Text Prize of YA and Children’s Writing. Self-describing it as a ‘book with no villains’, Nina discusses the editing process, finding the voice of her young protagonist, what it means to be vulnerable, and finding the right moment in a project’s development to put it out into the world.
