Part of the Indian Performing Arts Convention (19-25 September)- a carnival of Carnatic music and a bounty of Bharatanatyam!

Witness a new incarnation of the double bass through this captivating marriage of Carnatic music with Western traditions.

Rohan Dasika is a double bassist with a diverse musical life in Australia and abroad. After being awarded the Freedman Classical Fellowship in 2019, Rohan began taking his first steps towards finding a more personal form of expression on the double bass, marrying his orchestral training with the Carnatic music of his South Indian heritage.

Rohan will perform alongside an exciting group of young musicians from Melbourne, at the peak of their fields in orchestral, contemporary classical and Carnatic music, allowing the combination the expressive capabilities of Carnatic violin with the sonic textures enabled by a string ensemble. This performance will also showcase two major commissions for solo double bass by Australian improvisers and composers Sandy Evans and Adrian Sherriff ' musicians who are both pioneers in Australia in developing hybrid practices informed by Carnatic music.
