Diuretics started in 2023 as an idea for a one-off performance involving local noisesmiths who are either current or former members of local sludge metal bands (namely, Religious Observance and Isua), joining forces to create a singular extension of their work in those groups. Momentum built, a name was chosen, and they now have a demo, new material in the works, and three gigs under their belt. The sound has also morphed into something they didn’t quite expect, eschewing brickwalled power electronics and harsh noise wall in favour of ominous dark ambience, 80s death industrial beats, and nods to the synthetic minimalism of krautrock and cold wave. The three members - Mikey, The Void, and X - still retain very similar tools to their sludge metal trade, so the intent to overwhelm and paralyse remains, only now with space for vulnerability that is harder to achieve amongst thick, heavy riffs. It should be said, though, that the potential volatility of a late night set such as this is absolutely something the group are excited to lean into.
