The Besnard Lakes Are the Roaring Night
The Canadian rock group return with their third album, The Besnard Lakes Are the Roaring Night. On this latest release, band founders, Jace Lasek and Olga Goreas continue their creation of dark, atmospheric songs which characterized their first two albums.
In a time when laptops often replace traditional instrumentation, it’s great to hear an album like this where fuzzy guitars reign and obvious consideration has gone into crafting a richly textured sound. The Besnard Lakes are experts in creating tension which builds to a grand scale without being over the top, like that heard on Chicago Train. Although the vocals of Lasek and Goreas are different, both are moving, making it impossible to choose a favorite between Lasek’s high falsetto lead on Glass Printer or the sweet delivery given by Goreas on Albatross. Their vocals also unite in outstanding harmonies, like that heard on Like the Ocean, Like the Innocent Pt. 2: The Innocent. The splitting of tracks in this way also adds to the epic listening experience brought by this album with Like the Ocean, Like the Innocent Pt. 1: The Ocean, giving an effective introduction to not only part two of this track but the album overall.
The Besnard Lakes Are the Roaring Night is available now through Jagjaguwar.
