Phantogram

Music Release

Eyelid Movies

On their debut release for indie label, Barsuk Records, Phantogram have succeeded where many more experienced bands before them have failed-producing an entire album of interestingly composed, infectious tracks which won't have you reaching for the fast forward button.

You may be familiar with some of the tracks which make up Eyelid Movies as the album is an extension of the band's debut EP, which was released last year. However, songs like the extremely catchy Mouthful of Diamonds and When I'm Small and the synth heavy Running from the Cops did not receive the level of exposure they deserved on their first outing, hopefully now rectified with the album's release by the very capable Barsuk. The new tracks are just as enticing, a particular highlight being the dark and dramatic, Bloody Palms.
Phantogram is made up of keyboardist Sarah Barthel and guitarist Josh Carter but like their name suggests, they have a much more layered sound than you would expect from a two-piece band-with a laptop replacing what could be the band's other three members. The purveyors of what's been labelled “Street beat, psych pop” have brought together a diverse range of sounds from hip-hop inspired beats, to electronic loops and fuzzy guitars which combine not only well together but also with the exchanging vocals of Barthel and Carter. We may be early into the new musical year but don't be surprised if Eyelid Movies remains one of the most intriguing albums of 2010.

Eyelid Movies is available now through Barsuk Records.
