Hertz So Good...

An enthusiastic crowd of music and AFL fans gathered at Elsternwick Park yesterday for a celebration of both those cultural and aesthetic experiences...

The annual Reclink Community Cup is a unique event where families, friends, radio broadcasters, musicians, Gorillas and walking cassette tapes get together in the depth of Winter to show support for charity, and share goodwill for a few hours on a Sunday afternoon.

It's also a battlefield; a tightly fought contest where rules submit to sheer will, and no love is lost as the Rock Dogs and the Megahertz engage for four quarters of 'friendly' football.

Yesterday was no exception. With a memory of inglorious defeat the year before, the Rock Dogs took to the field in 2011 with much hurt pride, and their determination was fierce in the first half of the match.

The Megahertz defended bravely, but conceded several early goals leaving a substantial goal margin looming over them as they entered the second half. A rally in the Third Quarter showed the mostly cheering, and occasionally streaking crowd, something of the indomitable spirit of the 2010 champions as they kicked three successive goals.

The encroaching rain clouds ominously signaled the dying of the light for the radio broadcasters however, and not even an ingenious strategy by the Megahertz's Red Runner to persuade several Rock Dogs players to return to the bench could even the score.

As the final siren sounded, the Rock Dogs may have had more points on the board than their opponents, but as always, the real winners were the thousands of witnesses, and participants in this annual and noble struggle for a better world through music and sport.
