How did you first connect with Triple R?
My first exposure to 3RRR was way back in the early 1980s when myself and friends went to a RRR picnic. Way too far back to remember the details but I do remember there was a pop concert happening nearby at the Myer Music Bowl which we quite deliberately ignored!
What/when was your first show?
In the mid 1990s I did a series of fills for a range of programs before getting the nod to produce and present two hours of instrumental works between 4pm and 6pm every Sunday. That was back in 1998 and I'm still here.
What's your favourite Triple R story?
Every Sunday afternoon before I go on air I get to spend about half an hour with the JVG Radio Method team. Johnnie Von Goes breaks every rule of radio and plays mostly music I don't like. Somehow however it remains something I look forward to every week of every year.
Your favourite other Triple R program and why?
All 3RRR programs are special so I can't single any one individual program out. I am still missing Simon Hampson's Symbiosis though...
What does Triple R mean to you?
Triple R means the world to me. Triple R has quite literally changed my life and experiences here have led me to change my career to the point where I now work full-time in community radio. The commercial media landscape continues to degenerate as it tries to cater to the lowest common denominator in order to sell more advertising. Triple R on the other hand continues to take a qualitative approach and empower volunteers to use their creativity and judgment.
The studio door has accidentally jammed shut with you stuck inside. If there was only one CD in there with you what would you want it to be and why?
Preferably a CDR with mp3 files as I could then have about ten hours of music rather than just the one album (and thankfully the Denon CD players will play mp3 files). On that CDR would be ‘In a Silent Way' by Miles Davis, Ben Frost's ‘Theory of Machines', at least one Adam Simmons disc, ‘Sex' by The Necks and...there is no end to this question!
