Presents Noise In My Head
How did you first connect with Triple R?
I found Triple R in search of escapism from high school. It was a far better teacher for my limited attention span. I have vague recollections of meeting Woody McDonald at the Rob Roy one night where he coerced me into covering for him on Wig Wam Bam (then on Sunday afternoons) while he travelled overseas. It was an invitation I'll be eternally grateful for, and I've been a regular contributor ever since.
What/when was your first show?
Noise in my Head has been my one and only program, originally broadcasted 6pm-8pm on Saturdays in late 2005. Back then I played heaps of ‘60s trash garage, modern psychedelia, folk artists, orchestral pop, punk bits and art wank. Generally music deemed too intelligent for the Noise of now.
What's your favourite Triple R story?
During a graveyard at the old Fitzroy studios, I put the station on autopilot with a 20 minute LP while I played video games in the foyer. I was interrupted by a listener who had called in wondering why the track had been skipping for three minutes. Whoops.
Your favourite other Triple R program and why?
Declan Kelly's Against the Arctic. Our programs share a similar aesthetic. We both have an unspoken aim to transmit some otherworldly frequencies. I think he really sets the mood of Noise. I'm either driving to the station completely hypnotized by some deep techno or uplifted by some seriously bent Brazilian psych. Never have I met a more devoted Arthur Russell enthusiast.
What does Triple R mean to you?
Freedom.
The studio door has accidentally jammed shut with you stuck inside. If there was only one CD in there with you what would you want it to be and why?
It would be a CD-R compilation of Can, Lizzy Mercier Descloux, Michel Polnareff, Serge Gainsbourg, Juan Atkins, Throbbing Gristle, Goblin, Scientist, Talking Heads, The Congas, Guru Guru, Dennis Wilson, Arthur Russell, Haruomi Hosono, Chris and Cosey, Brian Eno, Giorgio Moroder, Supersempfft, Carl Craig and Eddy Current Suppression Ring. These are the tools for my survival.
