Declan Kelly

Presents Against The Arctic

How did you first connect with Triple R?

Initially as a listener tuning into people like Johnny Topper, Ennio Styles and Woody amongst many others. Ennio interviewed me when I was in Italy covering the Red Bull Music Academy and then after I got back to Australia in 2006 I started doing graveyards. I began broadcasting properly at the end of that year.

What/when was your first show?

December 2006, Against The Arctic # 1.

What's your favourite Triple R story?

I'm sure there are many more hilarious anecdotes in the station's 30 + year history but I like drinking champagne in the middle of my show after we hit 10,000 subscribers in the 2007 radiothon.

Your favourite other Triple R program and why?

Such a tough question! Probably Michael Kucyk's Noise In My Head or Johnny Topper's New & Groovy. Love listening to Karen Leng and Woody of an evening though!

What does Triple R mean to you?

Music, humour, seriousness, arts, politics, community, music.

The studio door has accidentally jammed shut with you stuck inside. If there was only one CD in there with you what would you want it to be and why?

Maybe Mingus, Black Saint & The Sinner Lady? Or one of the many, incredible Necks albums.

General Bio

Declan Kelly has been an active member of Melbourne's music community for the last 10 years. Through Dj'ing in; clubs, bars and festivals; producing music; designing sound for theatre; touring international artists; and his well-received and eclectic radio programs on PBS and RRR, he has gained a reputation as someone who cares about sound and constructs it as such, often working in tandem with musical partner Richard Campbell under their Research & Development alias. In the disco his open ear for electronic and acoustic sounds and an adventurous mixing style has seen him become a unique part of the talented fraternity of Melbourne's underground DJ world. He has supported international guests across many styles including Kevin Saunderson, Prefuse 73, Theo Parrish, Roisin Murphy, Matthew Herbert, Manitoba (Caribou) and Tom Middleton amongst others.

A collaborative effort with Richard and James Cecil (Architecture In Helsinki) was released in 2005 under the name Tempo Perdido through Soul Jazz Records in the UK. Since that time Declan has been working towards refining his studio and learning more about the process of recording and engineering his own sounds.

After undertaking postgraduate study in Sound Design at the VCA (2006), Declan has been busy dividing his Dj Schedule with Sound Design, making music for Theatre (Navigators', MIAF 2006; La Douleur', Malthouse 2006; ‘Please Hold', Next Wave 2008; ‘The Lonely Instrument', Fringe 2008), Film (‘A Nutty Embrace', VCA 2006) and working towards the release of an album of his solo material. Declan is currently working with award winning Australian company My Darling Patricia on their new show 'The Nightgarden' which will premiere at the Meat Market (Melbourne) and Carriageworks (Sydney) in March 2009.

As a sideline Declan produces Research & Development as a quarterly website/e-zine with Richard Campbell, Dave Hagger, Neil Stafford and Martin Langridge. The site is primarily concerned with music featuring, dj mixes, artist mp3 downloads, art and writing, all with a strong focus on Australian content.

Against The Arctic, a radio show.

It might not always be easy but relationships never are.
