After years of working his guts out in the Australian tv scene, seeing his shows on various tv networks axed before they'd been given a chance to find an audience, writer-comedian Shaun Micallef has hit the bigtime on Channel Ten, becoming the network's most bankable (and bonkable) comedy star.
Nearly twenty years ago, Shaun was a lawyer, constantly whining to his wife about how he wanted to be a comedian. His wife couldn't take it anymore, and drew a fat X on the calender that graced their toilet wall. "X marks the spot, pal," she said, "X is D-day. Should I draw a D instead of an X? Too late. You've got til D-day, I mean X-day, to make it as a comedian. Or shutup about it. I can't take it anymore!!!!" Shocked by the spittle forming at the corners of his wife's mouth - she was, after all, pre-menopausal - Shaun decided to get hilarious. The rest is history. Or should we say, herstory. Because if it wasn't for his wife, Shaun would still be making loads of cash as a terribly unhappy lawyer.
My natural inclination during our interview with Shaun was to get all Oprah on his arse and pose questions like, "You are sex on a freakin stick. How is that for you?" But fortunately Dave was there, asking Shaun about his comedic influences, and they talked about a bunch of people I've never heard of. Peter and Cook? Dudley and Moore? Who are these has-beens? I played some Weird Al just to keep the vibe vaguely contemporary.
