15th Dec 09

Written by Elizabeth:

Sunday night I caught Clare Moore's new project, The Dames. It's such a delight when you watch a musician play with a different lineup, a different script, and see a whole other side of 'em open up. The Dames are Clare Moore, Kaye-Louise Patterson, and Rosie Westbrook. The music is summertime breezy 70s L.A., we're talking warm and lovely plus a whole bunch of other things I could say like "Kate Bush smokes a joint that Dusty Springfield left in her ashtray" or "Tori Amos pops a 'lude and bumps into Stevie and Lindsay at a party hosted by Eleanor Friedberger from the Fiery Furnaces and Verity Susman from Electrelane, with interior decor by the Partridge Family." (Needless to say, halfway thru their set I made up my mind to write all future Dames press releases, whether they want me to or not).

Today's spesh guests were Sean and Bronwyn from The Spoils, who are a hard-working Melbourne-based band who've toured Europe like 3 or 4 times. Yes, they have their shit together. Bronwyn played violin a long time ago on my old band's album. For some reason she came into the studio when I wasn't there (I was in the toilet doing speedballs, I guess) so it was nice to finally meet and discover her loveliness. The Spoils' momentum is marching on unabated and they are a fine live band.

After the show Dave and Clare invited me to lunch with them at a bakery/supermarket/cafe on Sydney Road. Dave and Clare shared a plate (because they are lovers) and I ate from a separate, singular plate. Sumptuous falafel and bread and dips, if you're wondering. Then I walked home and made a green juice. Then I flicked through the latest Trip magazine and found only one picture of myself. Then I took to bed, inconsolable, with Season 2 of The Wire, and dreamt of Dominic West wiping away my tears and tearing off my underpants.
