Breaking and Entering: Preserving Language Through Innovation With Yirinda

Meanjin/Brisbane duo Yirinda have just released their debut self-titled album on Chapter Music, and was featured as an Album of the Week here at Triple R. Yirinda combine ancient Aboriginal language with sublime modern production, invoking thousands of generations of story and culture, while emerging as something entirely new.

Fred Leone and Samuel Pankhurst who make up Yirinda join Simon on Breaking and Entering to discuss the genesis of the group, and how their songwriting process is centred around the endangered Butchulla language, now spoken by only a handful of people.

"The way we made the album.....we quite litereally put Fred's voice first for everything, which is the opposite of how you would normally record an album."

Listen back to hear a behind the scenes account of the making of a singular work in the Australian songbook.
