The International Pop Underground: Connie Constance is an Indie Kid Not a Neo-Soul Act
"I'm just making indie music," says Connie Constance, the London-based artist who's delivered two LPs, 2019's English Rose and 2022's Miss Power.
When she was starting, Constance found that her identity —a mixed-race artist playing indie music— caused confusion in the music industry.
"I was like: 'I'm an indie kid, that's what I grew up on, this is the music that I make'. [My music] still needed a lot of defining, but I knew my identity, I knew what I was trying to do," Constance says.
"It wasn't 'til I was working with labels and stuff, and they were like: 'We don't really understand what you're trying to do. Are you doing the soul thing? What's going on?' I was like: 'why is everyone so confused?' Then the penny dropped: 'oh, is this a race thing?'"
In Australia for her first-ever tour, Constance came by the RRR studios and spoke to Anthony Carew of The International Pop Underground.
She talked about her musical history, her Life Without Buildings-styled free-associative jam YUCK!, her ultra-positive ambitions for an upbeat, upcoming third album, and her ongoing dismay at people assuming she's a neo-soul act.
